Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, full name Adelaide Amelia Louise Theresa Caroline (born August 13, 1792, died December 2, 1849), was Queen consort of the United Kingdom and Hanover as the wife of King William IV. Adelaide was the daughter of George I, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen, and Luise Eleonore of Hohenlohe-Langenburg.
Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia, is named after her, as is the Adelaide Peninsula in the Canadian Arctic.
Adelaide wrote this letter to her two year old niece Princess Victoria, future Queen of the United Kingdom, in May 1821.
The letter:
MY DEAR LITTLE HEART, — I hope you are well and don't forget Aunt Adelaide, who loves you so fondly.
Loulou and Wilhelm desire their love to you, and Uncle William also.
God bless and preserve you is the constant prayer of your most truly affectionate Aunt,
ADELAIDE.
ADELAIDE.
Note: Loulou and Wilhelm = Princess Louise and Prince William of Saxe-Weimar, children of Duchess Ida of Saxe-Weimar, Adelaide's sister.
