Mary, Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood (born Victoria Alexandra Alice Mary on April 25, 1897, died March 28, 1965) was a member of the British royal family. She was the only daughter of King George V and Queen Mary, and was also the aunt of the current British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. In the First World War, Mary performed charity work in support of servicemen and their families. She was given the title of Princess Royal in 1932. During the Second World War, she was Controller Commandant of the Auxiliary Territorial Service. Mary and her husband Henry Lascelles, the 6th Earl of Harewood, had two sons, George, 7th Earl of Harewood and The Honourable Gerald Lascelles.

The letter:

BADMINTON.
GLOUCESTERSHIRE.
November 7-th 1944.
My dear Lord Dawson,
I fear you are having a long time in Hospital and I feel for you so much. [illegible] our grapes at Harewood are finished but I hope that Jackson & Piccadilly will send you some nice ones if possible. They bring so many good wishes that you may soon feel really better — I arrived here on Nov. 15th and found my mother wonderfully well —
Yours sincerely
Mary /
